@chrisaldrich I had never thought about this with a typewriter before. But yeah, I memorized the shortcut for em dash years ago, maybe more common than any other special character.

@rscottjones Oh no, hope you feel better!
@bax Agreed.
@jgmac1106 That could get interesting. Hopefully we wouldn’t all run around without wearing pants in protest. 🙂
@annahavron @tinyroofnail @JohnBrady I’m probably just overthinking my own writing now. I agree, we were writing this way before AI existed! 🙂
@stijndm Sorry, you’re right. I’ll fix that in a bug fix update today or tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s a work-around: if you double-click an upload to open the photo window, the “Copy HTML” button there does copy the alt text!
@grubz Thank you.
@manton.org My current thinking: this is more about how we organize ourselves. We follow and interact with those with similar beliefs. Mastodon’s small instance architecture amplifies ideas that resonate in the group. This creates a bubble with greater chance of leaning to extremist views. (Maybe? Not sure.)
@johngordon.bsky.social My current thinking is that this is more about how we organize ourselves. We naturally follow and interact with those with similar beliefs. Mastodon’s small community-based architecture amplifies ideas that resonate in the group. This creates a bubble with greater chance of leaning to extremist views. I might be wrong, but I see some of that happening.
@dave I am all for that.
@johngordon.bsky.social Usually far left, yes. And I’m very liberal! It’s not always political, though.
@tinyroofnail Maybe that’s the answer. We could go all-in on dashes and use them even more than AI. 🙂
@dave Heh. It has been a busy week, sorry if I’ve misunderstood. There are a lot of different ways to approach this problem.
@bryan That is funny that ChatGPT ignores those instructions. It can’t help itself! Maybe when training GPT-5 they will think about this, not that it’s too serious of an issue.
@artkavanagh Love that you have an em dash in your reply. 🙂 I hope that eventually we can go back to using whatever punctuation we want without worrying too much about being mistaken for robots.
@jabel Well said. Yes, I agree, there are exceptions, the occasional person who is just so corrupt or narcissistic that it’s hard to give them the benefit of the doubt.
@pratik Are you trying to imply something, or is your reply hypothetical? I’m confused. The idea behind my post was to think about how we treat people, not make a list of everything that is good and bad in the world. Also I very purposefully used the phrase “nearly everyone”!
@grubz Oh no. I really don’t want my writing flagged like that. I probably won’t ever use a checker on it. 🙂
@birming Oops, the pricing page is wrong. Notes is supposed to be available to all standard Micro.blog subscribers. Not Micro.one, though! So if it’s showing up for you in limited form, that must be why. I’ll update the documentation and pricing page today.
@sander I’m not totally sure. I know @dave is using the new WordPress REST API already. That is very specific to WordPress, though, and might not be suitable for other platforms.
@birming It was Premium but is now available to everyone. Yes, on the Mac, right-click on a note and choose “New Post” to start a new blog post from the note contents. (Seems we’re missing that on the web…)
@johnbeales.com Great! Maybe we should pull the post formats UI out of the app. Sort of doubt anyone is using it.
@johnbeales.com Let me know if I can help. The Mac app has a setting for WordPress to use the “post format” (like Aside, etc.) but that doesn’t seem common in WordPress anymore.
@dave Okay, maybe we aren’t exactly on the same page. I want Mastodon to have an open API for posting. Sounds like you’re saying we should have an external bridge that maps MetaWeblog API to ActivityPub? Both WordPress and Micro.blog can do that. In theory there could be an even lighter-weight service that did it.
@johnbeales.com Ignore that last reply, the links accidentally went to GitHub’s Bluesky profile. The repos are: microdotblog/microblog-mac and microdotblog/microblog-react.
